Whangarei Cattery – Deloraine Holiday Retreat for Cats

We know all to well a disaster can happen at any time, and as a pet owner you may suddenly find yourself not only worrying about your family but also your pets, so it’s important to think about them when you put your families disaster plan together.

If we needed to leave our home, what should I do with the family pets?

Take your pets with you if possible, if its unsafe for you its unsafe for them, you just don’t know how long it will be befor you’re able to return home.

So how do I prepare my pet ?

Make sure your pet can be identified.. eg.. ID Tags, Microchipping, and Registration tags.

Ensure you pets Vaccinations are kept up to date … Animal shelters ….eg…. kennels and Catteries, can not take unvaccinated animals.

Include some supplies for your pet in your family emergency kit…. food, water and food bowl,  Collar and leash or carry cage, Vaccination, current registration and microchip records, Litter tray and litter…. litter can be… news paper, bark, kitty litter or similar. If your pet is on medication you should include this, and a favorite toy or blanket.

Under New Zealand Law:

It is the owners responsibility to always see to the physical, health and behavioural needs of their pets, and It is an offence to desert or abandon your pets without a reasonable excuse.

Cattery Whangarei – Deloraine Cattery

As we all know our cuddly furry friends have evolved from hunters, so we can understand their sense of sight is one of their strongest, and designed so they can see in the dimmest of light. Tests have shown cats appear to distinguish light spectrums rather than colors.

The Retina – the nerve center at the back of the eye – contains cells called cones ( these are responsible for converting light into color) and Rods (rods are responsible for black and white) and in cats the Rods outnumber the cones.

So Can Cats see colors… Not in the same why we do, we have more cone cells in our Retina, which allow us to see colors. Cats have more Rods cells in their Retina, so if they could see any color at all it would more likely be bark colors such as Blues, greens and purples but bright colors would appear dual, less intense or vibrant.

Rachael & Mr B at Whangarei Cattery The Deloraine
Rachael a true care-giver

People often ask me, “what did you do before you came to the Cattery Rachael”?

I grew up on the Family farm in the Waikato, when my family moved North I started working at the  Bendon factory in Kamo. It was a job and I was only young. I met a lot of new friends working  there over the years, got my first car stolen from in the car park while I was at work, brought my first house, life was good. I left there to have my first Child and the Bendon factory closed not long after that.  I’ve had another Child since, studied a little and had a few part-time jobs, merchandising, Bar work,  just a couple of hour here and there, to earn a bit more money.

When my youngest daughter went off to school I decided it was time to get a job, I needed something 9-3 so I could still be there for my girls. My Mum who is a Care giver for Home Support North said I should try there, so I did.  For four and a half years I worked with the elderly. The pay was sad, but this was one of the most rewarding  things I have ever done, and I met some of the most wonderful people. I wasn’t just the cleaner and care giver, I was a friend, someone to talk to, in some cases I was the only person they saw all week. I’d clean up the house, make the bed, and cook meals, some even needed help with showering.  I miss that life sometimes and the people… they are gone now, but I am happy to have been part of their lives even if it was only for a short time.

So now I’m here at what I believe is, Whangarei’s Best Cattery, The Deloraine….. Wow…. I sometimes need to pinch myself, from care-giver to Business women, but we all know at the end of the day I will always be a care-giver, only difference is I now look after Cats and I Love it. I’m not an academic, as you tell by my Blog posts, nor do I need money to be truely happy, although it keeps the bank manager off my back. I love my Family and friends, It makes me feel good knowing I’ve done the best I can, and to help make someone elses life better for it.

Just like Children, not all pets like to just eat what we give them.

So to try to help make things a little easier for you here are some tips.

  1. If you’re giving medication with food, Do it when the animal is hungry and only give them a very small amount, make sure they have eaten it all before giving them the rest of their meal. Do not let them see you putting medication in their food.
  2. So your cat doesn’t eat medication with food? ok with two people, while one of you hold the cats front legs … so you don’t get scratched the other person can then pop the tablet into the cats  mouth, Don’t let them go untill he’s licked his lips.
  3. That didn’t work? Guess you have a fighter… again with two people try wrapping him in a towel… the cat that is….  🙂  leaving the head out, again one of you hold the cat and the other pop the tablet into the cats mouth.
  4. Ok so now you have holes in your arms face and fingers, But has the cat taken the tablet ? next time try using a pill popper or get someone else to do it.

This bit of information was brought to you by Rachael Seymour from Whangarei Cattery The Deloraine don’t forget it’s the only place your cat should stay while you’re away.
