Whangarei Cattery – Deloraine Holiday Retreat for Cats

We know all to well a disaster can happen at any time, and as a pet owner you may suddenly find yourself not only worrying about your family but also your pets, so it’s important to think about them when you put your families disaster plan together.

If we needed to leave our home, what should I do with the family pets?

Take your pets with you if possible, if its unsafe for you its unsafe for them, you just don’t know how long it will be befor you’re able to return home.

So how do I prepare my pet ?

Make sure your pet can be identified.. eg.. ID Tags, Microchipping, and Registration tags.

Ensure you pets Vaccinations are kept up to date … Animal shelters ….eg…. kennels and Catteries, can not take unvaccinated animals.

Include some supplies for your pet in your family emergency kit…. food, water and food bowl,  Collar and leash or carry cage, Vaccination, current registration and microchip records, Litter tray and litter…. litter can be… news paper, bark, kitty litter or similar. If your pet is on medication you should include this, and a favorite toy or blanket.

Under New Zealand Law:

It is the owners responsibility to always see to the physical, health and behavioural needs of their pets, and It is an offence to desert or abandon your pets without a reasonable excuse.

It doesn’t matter whether you use a Cattery with private rooms or Semi Individual where your cat shares with others during the day; there is always a small chance your cat may get sick. Just like when we take our kids to play group, there is a possibility they may get head lice or even a cold, And as do play groups, Cattery owners do all they can to minimize the rick of your cat getting sick, after all, it our lively hood.

All Cat Boarding facilities in New Zealand are required to have some kind of Isolation unit or facility; this is a room where a sick cat can be kept on its OWN with NO other animals, this is to stop the spread of any viruses etc.

It is standard procedure at The Deloraine Cattery. Should a cat show ANY signs of illness to immediately have the animal placed into Isolation so he/she can be monitored. A vet is then called, and if need be the cat is taken to the veterinarian as soon as possible. When the vet has given the all clear the cat is then returned to the cattery, however it will then spend the remainder of its stay in the Isolation facility, (unless otherwise advised by the vet)

Owners or emergency contacts are only called if required; this would mean the animal is very ill or we simply can not have the animal back at the cattery, and you will need to arrange to have the cat collected from the Vets.

So why don’t we call the owners first?

  1. We feel it is far more important to call the vet first; after all it may not be anything to worry about.
  2. What can you do (the owner) from half way around the world? Except worry.
  3. Lets say your cat was in a fight at home, 2 days later you drop him off at the cattery, and off you go on holiday. mean while an abscess has started to devalop on your cat, where it had been bitten by the cat it was figthing with at home days before, the abscess then pops… I will do my best to keep the wound clean however your cat will need a shot of antibiotics, so off we go to the vet …. I will not phone you while you are on holiday to tell you this, as your cat is fine.
  4. When you leave your cats at the cattery, the terms and conditions clearly states that… we reserve the right to refer your cat for veterinary attention should this, in our opinion be necessary. The owner shall be responsible for all costs incurred.

Most cats are very happy and settle into the cattery within a few hours, and you must keep in mind it is not always the facilities staff or owner at fault if cats fall ill, think of it this way…. you could always leave your cat at home alone… where they can get sick  from the stress of being left on their own, fight with the neighbours cats, run away, get hit by a car……. etc   sorry but that’s the facts. “Don’t Risk Leaving Your Cats Home Alone”.

The Cattery is the only place your cat should stay while you’re away

The Deloraine Cattery is a "Cats" only facilityCat Boarding facilities vary in construction, from the basic wooden cabins to the more modern up market penthouse units with private outdoor verandahs, heated blankets and TVs. Whilst this is re-assuring to see a modern building facility, the care behind the scenes is more critical. It is extremely important that you feel confident that the staff managing the cattery enjoy being with the cats. It is crucial that they are well trained, caring and capable and most importantly that they have adequate time to dedicate to the cats in their care. Be wary of facilities that claim to be ‘AgriQuality‘, ‘Vet  Approved’ or even claim to have a ‘Vet Excellence certificate’, as these programes are non-existent and facility owners are misleading the pubilc.

Everything we do at the Deloraine Cattery is for the good of the Cats.

• At the Deloraine Cattery you will see the cats show an interest in visitors and staff. This would indicate the cats are settled and happy.
• This is a “Cats” only facility. We are not a “Kennel”- the noise of dogs barking can be very stressful for cats – particularly if they are confined. Animal welfare organizations recommend that catteries are not attached to kennels.
• Our private and family rooms are a decent size, with separate run areas to allow the cats space to exercise enjoy the sun and be less stressed.
• The cattery is well ventilated, to ensure good airflow and reduce the risk of cross infection from other cats.
• The rooms are also insulated, and are warm and dry with heaters to provide extra warmth in the winter.
• The cattery buildings are secure, with all outdoor areas secured with amplimesh security panels, all exists and entry points are on a double door system to prevent cats escaping.
• The litter trays are changed daily or more if needed. All dirty litter trays are cleaned with Trigene to kill any germs and refilled with fresh litter.
• Fresh water is available to the cats at all times.
• Each of our rooms has a view, toys, scratch posts and or ladders to provide stimulation.
• We do brush the cats daily if your cat lets us, however we are not  professional cat groomers and you will need to book this service if your cat requires it.
• Only cats from same household share accommodation in our private and family suites. If you are boarding more than one cat, and they don’t get on well, ask if they can have their own rooms.
• The Deloraine Cattery uses the Onerahi veterinary practice, as this is handy to us and they will come to the cattery if need be.private and family suites
• It is required that all customers leave us with contact details for you and someone contactable in an emergency. If your cat is elderly or suffers from a medical problem it is recommended you let your vet know that you are boarding your cat and inform them of how far your wish treatments to go should your animal’s health decline.
• We feed top Quality Royal Canin Cat food, how ever we also have a number of other verities of soft food. If your cat is on a prescription diet you will need to bring this food along with your cat.
• We recommend you bring along some of your cats favorite toys and bedding (unwashed as this will remind him of home).
• We require that all cats have current vaccinations, and documents showing this must be produced upon arrival
• We also require all cats are upto date with Flea and worming.
When transporting your cat to the Deloraine Cattery, we recommend you use a strong and sturdy purpose built cat carrier with a solid base so that your cat cannot escape. It is important that your cat feels comfortable – line the carrier with newspaper or a towel and ensure that there is adequate ventilation. To prevent your cat from becoming travel sick, it is best not to feed him before your journey.

The Deloraine Cattery is a top Quality facility and books up fast over the holiday periods, so you will need to make your bookings well in advance.

We have had cats board with us for over a year while their owners have had to be away, 4-6 months stays are very common. The best thing is they can have their own room with secure verandah or join others in the Semi Individual area but still have their own private unit.
