Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease. The parasite infects most warm blooded animals, even people, but it’s primary host is the family Cat. Animals are infected by eating infected meat, by eating the feces of an infected cats, or passed on by a mother cat to her fetus. Cats, through contamination of hands,and contact with raw meat, especially pork are the main source of infection to people.
The infection usually causes mild flu-like symptoms, but healthy adults genrlly do not show any symptoms. However people with a weakened immune system, such as AIDS patients or pregnant women, may become seriously ill, and it can occasionally be fatal. The parasite can cause encephalitis an inflammation of the brain and neurologic diseases, and can also affect the heart, liver, inner ear and eyes.
The most common way for a cat to become infected with toxoplasmosis is by eating infected prey such as rodents & birds, it is also possible for a cat to become infected by eating raw meat.
